How to Measure for a Replacement Hot Tub Cover

A step-by-step checklist for getting the details right, from the outside dimensions to that tricky rounded corner.

THE QUICK ANSWER

What do you measure for a replacement hot tub cover?

Record the outside length and width of the surface the cover needs to fit, or the diameter for a round spa. For rounded corners, measure the corner radius. Also note the skirt drop, hinge orientation, strap positions and any cover-lifter or raised-shell features. Measure each dimension twice and identify whether you measured the spa or an existing cover.

Use the worksheet below to gather your information for Custom LeisureScapes. Record the actual readings; leave sizing allowances and final manufacturing dimensions for review.

THE MEASURING GUIDE

Six steps to a more useful cover enquiry

01

Choose the right measuring surface

If your existing cover still fits correctly and has kept its shape, its outside dimensions can be useful. If it is shrunken, warped, sagging or a poor fit, measure the spa itself. For a typical projecting shell lip, measure the outside of that lip. A cabinet rail, recessed installation or raised feature needs a closer look before choosing the measuring edge.

02

Measure length and width

Keep the tape straight across the outside edges. Record A and B using one consistent orientation, even on a square spa. Do not measure only the water opening or include a hanging skirt in the top-view dimensions. For a true circle, measure the diameter through the centre at the widest point. An oval needs additional dimensions.

03

Measure the corner radius

Place a carpenter’s square, or two straight edges at a right angle, against the two straight sides beside a rounded corner. They extend to an imaginary square corner. Along one straight edge, measure from that imaginary corner to the point where the curved spa edge meets the straight side. That distance is the radius; do not measure diagonally across the curve.

Two straight guides meet at an imaginary square corner. R measures along one guide from the tangent point, where the straight side starts to curve, to that imaginary corner.RCurve beginsImaginary cornerStraight-line radius · not a diagonal

Check every corner. If the corners differ, are cut rather than curved, or do not form a regular arc, send a labelled sketch and ask Custom what else is needed.

04

Separate skirt drop from cover thickness

The skirt is the flexible flap hanging below the cover body. On a suitable existing cover, measure vertically from the seam at the bottom of the cover body to the end of the flap. Foam thickness is a different specification. If the old skirt catches on a rail or leaves the rim exposed, describe the problem rather than copying it automatically.

There is no skirt length to assume for every spa. Note what is there and ask Custom to confirm the replacement specification.

05

Record hinge, straps and lifter details

Draw the hinge line on a top-view sketch and mark the control panel, steps and where the cover should open. Note fences, walls and other obstructions. Photograph your cover lifter and record its model if known; cover size alone does not establish lifter compatibility.

For straps, record their locations and measure from the bottom of the cover body to the clip attachment, excluding the clip. Note each strap if lengths differ. Existing latch positions may need to change with a replacement cover.

06

Double-check and send the whole picture

Repeat your readings and keep the units beside each number. Photograph the spa from above where safely accessible, the corner beside your square, the skirt in side view, and the lifter or any raised features. Include the brand, model and approximate year when known.

Do not add an inch, round dimensions to a presumed stock size or select a guessed radius. Keep actual readings separate from the final order dimensions. Custom can advise what needs confirming before you order.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Hot tub cover measuring questions

Should I measure my old cover or the hot tub?

Use the old cover only when it is undistorted and you are happy with its fit. If it has changed shape or never fitted properly, measure the spa’s appropriate outside edge and tell Custom what you measured. An unusual rim or top rail needs review.

Should I add an inch to my hot tub measurements?

Record the actual measurements first. Cover suppliers use different sizing allowances and ordering conventions. This worksheet does not add an allowance; Custom should confirm the finished size required for your replacement.

What if I cannot work out the corner radius?

Leave it blank rather than guessing. Photograph the corner with a carpenter’s square in position and include a labelled sketch. If the corners differ or are not regular rounded corners, describe that in your notes.

Does a square cover still need a hinge direction?

Yes, record how you want it to open. Equal length and width do not tell Custom where your control panel, lifter, steps or nearby obstructions are. Show the hinge and opening direction on a sketch.

Will my existing cover lifter and strap latches fit?

That needs checking. Share the lifter model, mounting details and photos, along with strap positions and lengths. Do not assume a replacement cover’s straps will line up with existing latches.

Can I use this worksheet for an octagon or a cut-corner spa?

Choose “Other” and use the notes to describe the shape. Extra side lengths, cut-corner dimensions or a template may be needed. A length and width alone are insufficient for an irregular cover.

Does completing the checklist order my cover?

No. It builds a personalized guide for your own reference. Use “Copy and send to Custom” to copy your spa details and measurements into the form below, or use Custom’s replacement-cover page. Final dimensions, construction, colour, price and ordering details need confirmation before an order is placed.

LET’S GET THE DETAILS RIGHT

Ask Custom about your replacement cover

For hot tub owners in London, Stratford and Southwestern Ontario: send your spa details, measurements and questions so the team can help with the next step.

Using the worksheet? Use “Copy and send to Custom” above, then paste your spa details and measurements into the message field in this form. Add your contact details and submit your enquiry. The worksheet does not submit anything for you.

If the form does not load, use the replacement-cover enquiry page. Keep a copy of your measurements for reference.
