THE INTERACTIVE POOL GUIDE

How Does a Swimming Pool Actually Work?Follow the water.

See the journey beneath the surface. Choose your pool and filter type, watch the water move, and explore the equipment that keeps it circulating.

Explore the cutaway

THE QUICK ANSWER

What happens to the water after it leaves your pool?

The circulation pump draws water from the pool through its collection plumbing and pushes it through the filter. The filter captures suspended debris. Water then passes through any installed heating or treatment equipment before returning to the pool through the return fittings. Filtration, circulation and proper water treatment work together; a filter does not replace sanitizer or water testing.

LOOK UNDER THE SURFACE

Build your pool’s water journey

CHOOSE · WATCH · EXPLORE

Choose the closest pool and filter type. The cutaway changes with your selections. Click the labelled equipment or take the guided tour to follow the loop.

The animated explorer needs JavaScript. The equipment explanations, filter comparison and questions below are available without it.

This is an educational cutaway, not a plumbing plan or an inspection of your pool. Real systems may include additional drains, valves, bypasses, cleaners and water-treatment equipment. A pool-type selection does not identify your installed plumbing. Animation speed is illustrative, not a flow-rate measurement.

FIVE JOBS IN ONE CONTINUOUS JOURNEY

What each part of your pool system does

01

The skimmer collects surface water

A skimmer draws in surface water and collects larger floating debris in its basket. It is a collection point, not the main filter. Watch for a change in surface draw, a damaged basket or persistent air entering the system. Your pool may have other collection points that are not shown here.

02

The pump moves the water

The pump creates circulation. Its strainer basket catches larger debris before water reaches the impeller, and the pump sends water onward to the filter. A pump running audibly does not prove that water is moving correctly. New noise, a visible leak, repeated loss of prime or a sudden change in return flow deserves attention.

03

The filter captures suspended particles

Sand, cartridge and D.E. filters use different filtering surfaces, but all separate suspended debris from circulating water. Filter condition, pump operation and other restrictions can affect the system. Compare pressure and flow with your own normal baseline at the same pump setting rather than treating one gauge number as correct for every pool.

04

An optional heater transfers heat

In the simplified loop, filtered water passes through a heater before returning to the pool. A heater adds warmth; it does not filter or sanitize the water. Equipment layouts, bypass arrangements and operating requirements vary. A heater that is not warming the water, displaying an error or leaking needs equipment-specific guidance.

05

The returns send water back

Return fittings deliver water back into the pool and contribute to circulation. Compare their flow with what is normal for your system and pump setting. Weak flow, persistent bubbles or an unexpected change is useful information for a service professional; it does not identify a single cause by itself.

THE SAME LOOP. A DIFFERENT FILTERING SURFACE.

Sand, cartridge or D.E.: what changes inside?

Sand / media

Water passes through a bed of suitable filter media, which traps debris. In the sand-filter cutaway, water moves down through the bed and collected water travels back up the central pipe.

Typical care: cleaning by the model’s backwash procedure. Media type, valve settings and service instructions must match the actual equipment.

Cartridge

A pleated cartridge provides the filtering surface. Water passes through the element and collected water leaves through the internal collection path. The cutaway illustrates a typical outside-to-inside arrangement.

Typical care: cleaning or replacing the correct cartridge according to its manual. Cartridge filters are not simply operated like a sand filter’s backwash valve.

Diatomaceous earth · D.E.

Pool-grade D.E. forms a filtering coating on supported elements or grids. The cutaway shows the coating doing the particle-catching work rather than a loose sand bed.

Typical care: model-specific cleaning and the correct D.E. recharge. Do not add D.E. to another filter type unless its manufacturer explicitly specifies it.

The see-through filter is a teaching illustration. Do not open a tank, loosen a clamp or change valve positions by copying the animation. Follow the exact equipment manual and arrange professional help for uncertain or abnormal operation.

A BETTER SERVICE CONVERSATION

Describe the change, not just “it isn’t working.”

Useful observations include the equipment brand and model, the displayed error, the pump setting, the filter’s normal and current pressure, whether return flow has changed, and when the symptom began. A photo of the equipment layout can help identify which component you mean.

If there is a suspected electrical hazard, damaged suction fitting or unsafe equipment condition, keep people away and obtain qualified help. This explorer explains the system; it does not diagnose a fault.

POOL CIRCULATION QUESTIONS

Understand the loop before changing the settings.

Is the pump the same thing as the filter?

No. The pump moves water; the filter captures suspended particles from that moving water. A pump strainer basket catches larger debris, but it does not replace the main filter.

Does every pool need a heater?

No. Heating is optional. Switch the heater off in the explorer to see the shorter illustrated route. The circulation and filtration loop still returns water to the pool.

Can an above-ground pool use a cartridge filter?

Yes, suitably selected cartridge systems can serve above-ground pools. Pool type alone does not determine the correct filter. Pump compatibility, hydraulic requirements, capacity and the equipment instructions matter.

Does changing the filter type change the whole water route?

The basic collection–pump–filter–return relationship remains. The filtering material, internal flow path and cleaning method differ. The illustration changes those internals without claiming that every manufacturer uses identical ports or plumbing.

Does filtered water still need sanitizer?

Yes. Filtration removes suspended material; sanitizer and balanced water care address a different part of pool maintenance. Continue testing and follow the products and instructions approved for your system.

Is there one normal filter-pressure reading?

No. Filter type, plumbing, pump speed and other conditions affect pressure. Use the baseline and service guidance for your own system, and compare readings at the same pump setting.

Why does my equipment look different from the cutaway?

Real pools can have more collection points, return lines, bypasses, valves, automation and treatment equipment. Pool structure also varies. The guide shows the basic jobs and water journey, not a model-specific installation drawing.

Can I save the diagram for my pool?

Yes. Choose the closest pool type, filter and heater option, then use “Save labelled diagram”. The download includes those selections and a component key. “Print / save PDF” opens a printable version. The saved diagram remains illustrative.
